Les Daniel

Les Daniel is one of the true veteran performers in indigenous dance in Australia today; he has a Torres Strait background mixed with Aboriginal bloodline. Les has connections from many of the islands in the Torres Strait including Murray & Darnley Islands from his mother’s side, and Yam Island from his Father’s side, with bloodlines to Aboriginal owned islands like Frazer and Thursday Islands. Les graduated in 1993 with NAISDA and was an original member & founder of the Ngaru Aboriginal & Islander Dance Company (now Descendance) in 1993. Les is a versatile performer covering dance, song, and instrument in both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal culture. Les has also worked in many contemporary cross cultural projects such as Flamenco Dreaming and To India with Love, Les was nominated at the 2006 Deadly Awards in the best dancer category.

Masepah Banu

Masepah is one of Australia’s most experienced traditional Torres Strait Islander and
Aboriginal Dancers; he graduated from NAISDA, the National Aboriginal Dance
Academy in 1996, Masepah is a Malu Kiai – Boigu Islander, From the Koedal-Augudhalaige clan, the Crocodile is his totem. He is one of the original Members of the Ngaru Dance Company Sydney’s first professional independent indigenous dance troupe formed in 1993, he has danced for over 20 years nationally and internationally.

Glenda Aragu

Glenda was born on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait in far North Queensland; she is a descendant of the Dhoeybaw and Sui Baidham clan from Saibai Island. Glenda graduated from NAISDA Dance College in 1991 completing her three year diploma in dance, during this time she performed and toured nationally in the NAISA productions “Kayan Walu”, “Djumba Woman” and “Reflections”. Glenda has since worked in Australia’s leading indigenous dance troupes including Bangarra, Descendance, AIDT and Naroo, and has toured in numerous productions nationally and internationally.

Xing-Yee along with her sister Majeda are the youngest members of Descendance, although still only children are accomplished performers with vast experience. The sisters have an interesting mixture of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and black American heritage, their mother Taryn Laleen is affiliated with the Aboriginal tribes, (Yidinji, Cairns), (Wuthathi, Shelbourne Bay) and the (Ku Ku Yalangi, Mossman), while their Torres Strait roots come from Moa, Darnley, and Yam Islands all in Queensland, their father Samuel Beatty has a black American background and is also involved in music and dance. The sisters lived and worked in the USA for two years with their parent’s performing in cultural workshops, schools, colleges, festivals, Pow Wows, across the USA from east coast to west coast, in 2006 they toured New York City with Descendance, today they perform in schools with their family, and have already begun doing corporate shows and other international events with Descendance.
